Pruning Imperial Mandarins | Tree to Table Vlog
Pruning (Imperial Mandarins at least!) has commenced following a successful first Imperial harvest on our new citrus orchards in Gayndah! In this Tree to Table vlog, National Farming Manager Tim shows us how it’s done.
Red Rich Fruits (NSW) Managing Director Matt Palise and National Farming Manager Tim Teague demonstrate the mandarin pruning process.
Pruning Imperial Mandarins: how it’s done
Pruning commences once all the imperial mandarins are harvested. Select branches are removed using secateurs powered by a petrol-powered air compressor, to create ‘windows’ in the tree. This allows light to reach through the canopy and promotes growth. It also creates layers within the tree structure, to prevent next year’s fruit from being marked on the tree.
The pruned branches and leaves aren’t wasted. These are fed through a mulcher and put back into the ground as a natural fertiliser.
